Your friendly neighborhood sharks.
Several sharks can be found along New Jersey. Such as the Sand Tiger shark, the Tiger shark, the Bull shark, the Hammerhead and the Great White shark. Possibly the most famous shark found in New Jersey is the Bull Shark. In 1916 a bull shark was responsible for several attacks and deaths of many people. In July 1 the first victim was a 25 year old man named Charles Van Sant, he was swimming at Beach Haven 16 yards from the shore when people started screaming that there was a black fin coming at him. Van Sant tried to swim to shore calling for help when he was dragged under, his body was never recovered. Five days later the next person to fall was Charles Bruder, he was swimming beyond the life lines, when he was attacked. He washed up on the shore with both his legs torn off. On July 12 it was a hot and humid day in the town of Matawan when 12 year-old Lester Stilwell and four of his friends went down to the town's most popular swimming hole. Stilwell was floating away from the pier when his friends saw him disappear, reappear, scream then disappear again, his friends knew that he was prone to having strokes and thought that he was having one so they ran to the town to get help. Many people came from the town including Lester's parent's. A man Stanley Fisher stripped to his bathing suit then dived in to find his body along with many other people in rowboats feeling with their poles for Lester's body. After several dives Stanley Fisher came up with Lester's body, but as he was wading back to the shore he felt something bump his right leg, startled he dropped Lester's body and felt for his right leg only to find that his whole leg from the thigh had been torn off. Scared and bleeding heavily he fainted and fell into the water, the other men pulled them out and took them on stretchers a nearby train station and two hours later arrived at the hospital, but it was too late, both Lester and Stanley died on that same day. The people of Matawan were frightened and angry, and within and hour the men were ready to throw dynamite in the water to try and kill the shark, but before they could another victim came in a motorboat. The victim was 14 year-old Joesph Dunn, him and his friends were swimming several hundred yards downstream when someone came running up warning them that there had been two shark attacks upstream and that they should get out. Joesph was the last one out when the shark bit his leg, severely injured he was rushed to the hospital, and although his injuries were severe he survived. The men of Matawan lined the creek armed with rifles, shotguns and pistols and as the tide came in so did sharks, but as it went out so did the sharks. A Bull shark is the mane suspect because the Bull shark is the only shark that can survive in fresh and saltwater making it one the worlds most deadliest shark in the world. In addition it has the highest level of testosterone of all sharks making it very aggressive.
